Fatima Taylor

Fatima Taylor (formerly Azimova) is an Uzbek-born American visual artist and scholar based in Columbus, Ohio. Her multidisciplinary practice encompasses painting, drawing, and mixed media, exploring themes of identity, memory, power, and the complexities of human experience. Moving between figuration and abstraction, her work examines the relationships between personal experience, historical narratives, and philosophical inquiry.

Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Taylor began her formal artistic education early through a specialized program for gifted young artists. She later studied Fine Art and Fashion Design at the Benkov Art Academy, developing a strong foundation in traditional drawing, painting, and visual composition.

After immigrating to the United States in 2001, Taylor continued her artistic practice while building a career in arts education. In 2009, she joined Shawnee State University as an art instructor, teaching a variety of studio courses while participating in exhibitions and community arts initiatives. After relocating to Columbus, Ohio, in 2017, she expanded her independent studio practice by taking commissions and public art projects, including Higher Goals, an outdoor mural in Hilliard, Ohio.

Taylor earned her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from Ohio University in 2025, where she received a Graduate Recruitment Scholarship and Graduate Assistantship. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Interdisciplinary Arts at Ohio University, with a concentration in art history and philosophy. Her doctoral research focuses on medieval Armenian manuscripts, engaging with questions of visual culture, historical interpretation, and the philosophical dimensions of artistic representation.

Through her parallel pursuits in contemporary art and historical scholarship, Taylor continues to explore how images construct, preserve, and communicate meaning across cultures and time.

She currently lives and works in Columbus, Ohio.

Artist Statement

My work explores the complexity of human connections and the deep significance of emotions.

Drawing from my background in academic figure painting and drawing, I have always found the human form to be a powerful medium for expressing emotion. Yet, my work extends beyond mere portraiture; it is a testament to the lived experiences and shared moments that define our connections with others.

Recently, my artistic search has taken a deeply personal turn, influenced by my own encounters with trauma and oppression, particularly during my upbringing in the former Soviet Union. Central to my recent work is an exploration of control and power dynamics. I am interested in dissecting the roots of authority and the role of fear. My art serves as a mirror to society, prompting viewers to confront the parallels between historical injustices and contemporary challenges.

In essence, my work is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. By confronting the shadows of the past, I aim to inspire dialogue and reflection, igniting hope for a more just and empathetic future.
